Body Repairs: Quarter Panel Patches

This section covers patching both quarter panels. The right side had been repaired at one time by simply gas welding some sheet metal on top of the dented panel and then applying an inch of filler. In addition, the bottom of the doorjamb portion attached to the B pillar was rusted out.

The left quarter panel had been repaired using pop rivets and lots of filler. The left side B pillar doorjamb bottom was also rusted out.

Removal

At the time of this repair, the only quarter patches available came without the B pillar doorjamb section. So, before the quarter panel patch could be installed, the lower doorjamb on the B pillars had to be removed and replaced.

Before removing anything, I measured and marked the cut line on the panel and the jamb. To remove the lower doorjambs, I cut them away from the quarter panel and then drilled out the spot-welds used to attach them to the B pillars and to the rocker panels.

Installation

The doorjamb patches had to be installed first, so I drilled some 3/16-inch holes in them so they could be rosette welded to the pillars and to the side of the rocker panels. Once the jamb patches were tacked in, I removed the quarter panel up to the cut line and began the fitting process.
